A 17 year old girl wrote me a message on Tumblr asking if it was “wrong” for her to have the same sense of humor as me.

Hi [REDACTED],

It’s very nice of you to write. The answer is no, it’s not wrong for a 17 year old girl like you to have the exact same sense of humor as me. I am DELIGHTED to discover that some younger people think I’m funny. I guess I assumed that because of the “mature” subject matter I often joke about, my jokes might not appeal to people under, say, 21. But if I look back to what made me laugh when I was a teenager, it was a lot of crazy, wacky, dirty stuff, so I guess it makes sense.

That said, I’ll tell you that what I write IS jokes. In reality (if it’s not clear from following me on Twitter) I’m a 35 year old happily married dad. My wife is a teacher and we have a little boy who’s almost one. So I’m not some nut-job out doing crazy things. It’s all in my imagination and I share it with others in an effort to make people laugh and hopefully be a tiny bit happier and nicer. I am a “happy” person and while there’s sarcasm and cynicism on the surface of some of my material, I am, by nature, optimistic.

I wish you luck in all your endeavors. I hope you cultivate YOUR imagination and read and work hard and stay safe.

Your pal,

Rob
